Smile!

Smiling is good for us and gives us advantages we may not even have thought about:

Research carried out by the University Manchester showed that 72% of people think of those who smile frequently as being more confident and successful. So if you want to seem confident – smile! 86% of people say that they are more likely to strike up conversations with strangers if they are smiling. Bosses are 12% more likely to promote people who smile a lot.

The effects of a smile are so powerful that even a smile on the telephone produces positive results. So smiling can do wonders for your social life and career. But what about its mental and physical benefits for you, the smiler?

Smiling your way to health

When we feel good, so we smile – but it’s a two way street. Smiling before we feel good can actually make us feel good. Smiling brightens your mood, it makes you feel better. When you smile, it relieves stress and has great health benefits. For example, a smile can increase the efficiency of your immune system. Smiling can lower your blood pressure and release feel-good chemicals called endorphins into your blood stream. But frequent smiling even has neurological benefits.
Smiling on the brain

A researcher named Robert Zajonc traced the impact of tightening various facial muscles on the flow of blood in blood vessels under those muscles. He discovered that tightening certain muscles affects blood flow to the brain – causing changes in mood. So the expression you wear on your face helps determine brain activity – for example, whether you’re in a good mood or a bad one.

When you smile, the blood that is going to the frontal cortex in your brain is cooled by the small cooling areas in your sinuses. This lowers the temperature of the blood and has the effect of lifting your mood. It should make you think twice about what you ‘put on’…

It works the other way too. It’s been shown that looking down (as some people habitually do) can make you feel down. And looking up can, well… make things feel like they are ‘looking up’!
Genuine v fake smiling

Actually, even fake smiling can make you feel better. However, other people tend to pick up on forced grins. We need to activate the unconscious mind to start producing more genuine smiles for better health and popularity.

Our KaiAmea Crystal Therapies can help with this.
